How to Avoid Deception – Part 5

Get Grounded and Stay Grounded in the God’s Word.

Psalm 119:11 says:  Thy word have I hid in my heart that I might not sin against thee.  [KJV]  The Word of God, the Bible is God’s manual for life.  It’s the rules of the road.  It keeps us in His Will and lightens our path.  From His Word we find wisdom, understanding, humility, love for our fellow man and the list of benefits go on and on.  There is no end to the benefits of knowing His Word and keeping it in our hearts.  It is the most important equipment we can place in our hearts.  It’s a sword and it protects us and gives us the discernment between soul and spirit.  Remember, the soul is our intellect, will and emotions.  Our souls are a component part of our tripartite being but we must know how to identify when we are being led by our soul and not our spirits.  God speaks to us in our spirits – that’s where we hear His voice.  The enemy speaks to us in our souls.  We speak to ourselves in our souls – our intellect, will and emotions.  There is so much to say here but I’ll keep it for another blog, another day.

The Word of God gets us grounded in Him and we grow in His grace because His word has an answer for every place in life.  God never contradicts His word.  He is consistent with His word and His word has every atom, every cell in this world locked up in His authority.  No one escapes it.  There is so much deception in the world concerning His word that confusion of it abounds but we must never be distracted from the enemy’s plans and maneuvers.  We must always keep our focus on His word and what it says.  We’ll never know how to apply it to our lives for daily living if we don’t make a diligent study of it.

The Bible tells us in Hebrews 4:12:  For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.  [NKJV]  Friends, its a sword; not a butter knife!  If you are looking to the Word of God to support carnal lusts and ideas you are simply wasting your time.  Before you do anything first know what God’s will is and follow the Holy Spirit.  Just because something is a good idea doesn’t make it God’s will for YOU.  You will never have His peace inside you until you know you are in His will.  His will is discerned first by getting grounded in His word.  Many deceive themselves by twisting the scriptures to suit their own lustful desires and the Book of James informs us that those that do so shipwreck their own faith.

2 Timothy 2:15 says:  Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.  This mean we must know God’s word for ourselves.  We must take this responsibility seriously with God if we want our walk with God to be successful and approved by Him.  We can’t put everything on the preacher, but we must be sure to pick the preacher God has placed in our lives.  When we are in His perfect will for our lives we’ll attend a church where God leads us and we’ll get grounded in His word.  The preachers are human too and we can’t be to critical of them although there are some bad apples out there.  To some level we can even expect offenses to come simply because we’re all human and live in a fallen world.  We must give grace to one another, including and especially the preachers God places in our lives in order to grow in grace properly.  Always pray for the preacher God places you under because if you don’t you’ll never get the most benefit from his/her ministry.  Every preacher has a different aspect of calling and we would do well in recognizing and appreciating that fact.  For whatever time you are under any ministry – get what God brought you there for – don’t waste time.  If the preacher falls into sin (remember, he is human too) wait for God to release you and until He does – keep praying for the preacher.  Remember, you will answer to the Lord Jesus at The Judgment Seat of Christ (where The Redeemed receive their rewards) on whether you prayed for the preachers He sent you under.  Although the Word doesn’t specifically say that it does say that every thing we do will come through the fire and either come through as gold or wood, hay or stubble.

Finally, the Word tells us Hebrews 11:6:  But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those to diligently seek Him. [NKJV]  So it’s clear here that if we want Him to be real in our lives, we must seek Him diligently.  Diligently simply means with our whole heart.  Our actions are the products of what is in our hearts.  Are we whole-heartedly following Jesus or not?  This is where the rubber meets the road.  We can’t lie here.  There’s no faking it here.  It takes diligence to get God’s attention.  God simply does not tolerate slack in serving Him.  He expects and deserves diligence.

If we get deceived, it’s most due to a lack in this area we failed to know God’s Word or we knew it and rejected it.  We can’t hear His voice unless we know His word for ourselves.  No one will have any excuse before God as to why they didn’t serve Him in this life simply because His word was with us.  We must know it by attending church.  Yes, church.  I know many are out there who have been hurt by churches but remember this:  at least those in the church usually have some higher standard of love than those out there in the world.  Sure there are goats in all churches – so stay away from them.  Goats are simply driven by their narcissistic motives – it’s all about them.  They’re what I call the “one-way street”, “all take and no give.”  They won’t teach or serve in the nursery, but they will serve on a board because that serves their narcissistic pride.  So be nice and show them the love of Christ but don’t hang with them.  Give them something to think about.  Here’s another sign of a goat:  they poison the flock.  Remember, by their fruits you know them.  Do they act with the fruits of the spirit:  love, joy, peace, patience, meekness and/or temperance?  Or do they act with unprovoked suspicion, jealousy, competition, division, strife and/or envy?  Which do you see?

I must add that we can’t truly get grounded in the Word unless we hear it preached.  We can’t just read it because our own carnal nature will be sure to step in an deceive us.  This is why it’s so important to seek God about what church we belong in and we grow in His grace from the product of that environment.  Community is important to a balanced growth in His grace.

If you don’t know God’s word for yourself, I urge you to get grounded in it.  Don’t reject church because you’ve been hurt by one.  Keep looking and seeking God to find a good church – it’s very important to your own spiritual growth.  God speaks to us in weekly messages.  He expects us to seek him diligently which also means to attend His house faithfully.

Finally, don’t expect results from God if we don’t read His Word – DAILY.  Never leave home without it.  Remember, you have a carnal nature within you that seeks to deceive you.  It will get you into all kinds of trouble if you let it.  It will get you fired from your job, it will get you evicted from your home, it will get you thrown in jail, it will even get you killed – if you let it take you to its intended destination.  It’s an animal – put it in the cage before you leave home each day.  Nothing puts your carnal nature down like God’s Word.
